Biography & Artist Statement
Harm Weistra lives and works in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. He studied Fine Arts at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam and at the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam, where he graduated in 2011. Before attending art school, he completed a Master's degree in Social Sciences, worked as a journalist, as a college teacher of journalism, and as a management consultant. These influences are reflected in much of his artistic work, in which human relationships are the central medium and driving force, emphasizing the unpredictability and often cruelty of social relationships and human behavior.
Weistra's work is usually beautiful at first glance, but disruptive upon closer inspection. Emphasizing aesthetics is not a means in itself, but a way to seduce the viewer to watch. By creating confusion and manipulating the viewer’s perception, Weistra aims to question the dichotomy between ourselves and others, inviting the audience to contemplate and reflect. Although storytelling is a common thread in Weistra's work, it is presented implicitly, leaving room for the viewer to fill in their own narrative.
In 2012 Weistra was selected as one of the Best Emerging Artists at the NeuNow World Wide Festival for Graduates. In 2015 he received the Stipendium for Emerging Artists and in 2019 the Stipendium for Established Artists, granted by the Mondriaan Fund, government-funded visual arts fund of the Netherlands.
Weistra's art spans artistic expressions such as film, video, animations, photography, and installations. His work reaches a global audience, including museums, biennials, and film festivals; it has received multiple awards and is in private collections.
